सुबह के समय इसका रंग लाल रहता है तो दोपहर को केसरिया और रात को यह चमत्कारिक शिवलिंग श्याम रंग का हो जाता है। इस शिवलिंग के बारें में एक बात और भी प्रसिद्ध है कि इस शिवलिंग का अंत आज तक कोई खोज नहीं पाया है। आसपास के लोग बताते हैं कि बहुत साल पहले इस शिवलिंग के रंग बदलने की घटना का पता लगाने के लिए खुदाई हुई थी. तब पता चला कि इस शिवलिंग का कोई अंत भी नहीं है. काफी खोदने के बाद भी इस शिवलिंग का अंत भी नहीं हुआ. तबसे इस शिवलिंग की महिमा और भी बढ़ चुकी है।

अचलेश्वर महादेव के रंग बदलने के पीछे कौन-सा विज्ञान है इस बात के लिए पुरातत्व विभाग भी यहाँ कार्य कर चुका है लेकिन सभी इस ईश्वरीय शक्ति के सामने हार मान चुके हैं। मंदिर की महिमा का व्याख्यान करते हुए पुजारी बताते हैं कि यहाँ से भक्त खाली नहीं जाते हैं. खासकर युवा लड़के और लड़कियां यहाँ अपने करियर, नौकरी और विवाह संबंधित समस्याओं के साथ आते हैं और यह भगवान शिव की महिमा ही है कि वह सबकी मुरादे पूरी भी करते हैं। साथ ही साथ पुजारी यह भी बताते हैं कि इस मंदिर का महत्त्व तो हज़ारों सालों से जस का तस है किन्तु फिर भी बहुत अच्छी संख्या में भक्त इसलिए नहीं आ पाते हैं क्योकि यहाँ आने वाला रास्ता आज भी कच्चा और उबड़-खाबड़ है।

आज भी यह एक रहस्य ही है कि इस शिवलिंग का उद्भव कैसे हुआ और कैसे ये अपना रंग बदलता है. भगवान अचलेश्वर महादेव का यह मन्दिर हजारों साल पुराना बताया जाता है। यह शिवलिंग एक प्राचीन चट्टान से बना हुआ है और देखने से ऐसा भी प्रतीत होता है कि जैसे किसी पहाड़ को काटकर यहाँ रख दिया गया है।
