बीसीसीआई अभी सितंबर-अक्टूबर या अक्टूबर-नवंबर में आईपीएल आयोजित कराने का इच्छुक हैं । आईपीएल को 2009 में दक्षिण अफ्रीका में आयोजित कराने के फैसले में शामिल रहे बीसीसीआई के एक पूर्व अधिकारी ने कहा कि मई में शशांक मनोहर के आईसीसी चेयरमैन पद से हटने के बाद तस्वीर बदल सकती है। अधिकारी से पूछा गया कि श्रीलंका से पेशकश मिलने पर उसका रवैया क्या हो, इस पर इस सवाल को वो नकार गए और उन्होंने कहा श्रीलंका क्रिकेट बोर्ड से अभी तक इस बारे में कोई प्रस्ताव नहीं मिला तो, फिर इस पर चर्चा का सवाल ही नहीं उठता।
श्रीलंका क्रिकेट अभी अनिश्चितकाल के लिए स्थगित कर दिए गए इंडियन प्रीमियर लीग आईपीएल के आयोजन का इच्छुक है लेकिन भारतीय क्रिकेट बोर्ड के प्रभावशाली व्यक्ति ने कहा कि अभी कोविड-19 महामारी से जूझ रही दुनिया में इस तरह के प्रस्ताव की चर्चा करने का कोई मतलब नहीं है। श्रीलंका क्रिकेट बोर्ड के अध्यक्ष ने गुरुवार को कहा था कि श्रीलंका बोर्ड इस टूर्नामेंट का आयोजन अपने देश में कराने के लिए तैयार है, जहाँ कोविड-19 से संक्रमित लोगों की संख्या बहुत कम है और भारत की तुलना वहां चीजें जल्द सामान्य होने की संभावना है । बोर्ड के एक वरिष्ठ अधिकारी ने गोपनीयता की शर्त पर कहा "जब दुनिया में सब कुछ ठप पड़ा है तो बीसीसीआई कुछ भी कहने की स्थिति में नहीं है"। श्रीलंका में अभी कोविड-19 के बहुत कम मामले हैं जबकि भारत में की संख्या 13000 के पार पहुंच चुकी है । भारत में 440 के करीब मौत हो चुकी है।
श्रीलंका क्रिकेट टीम तीन मैदानों गाल, कैंडी और प्रेमदासा स्टेडियम में मैचों का आयोजन कर सकता है। उसे जुलाई में भारत की तीन वनडे और तीन टी-20 की मेजबानी करने की तुलना में आईपीएल के आयोजन से अधिक लाभ होगा।
